Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you, as if some new thing happened to you: but if you partake of the sufferings of Christ, rejoice that when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

Reflection

Do not be surprised at the fiery trial — Peter writes to people who are shocked by their suffering. The instruction is not to avoid it but to rejoice in it, because sharing Christ's sufferings means sharing his glory. The trial is a participation, not a punishment.
