Read John 16:33 in the NABRE online

These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world.

Reflection

Jesus says two things at once: you will have trouble, and I have overcome the world. The first is a warning; the second is a verdict. The peace he gives rests on the second, not the first.

I have overcome the world

Two things at once: you will have trouble, and I have overcome it. The first is honest. The second is the verdict. The peace Jesus gives does not depend on the trouble ending; it depends on the victory already won.
