Read Nehemiah 8:10 in the NABRE onlineAnd he said to them: Go, eat fat meats, and drink sweet wine, and send portions to them that have not prepared for themselves: because it is the holy day of the Lord, and our day of joy. And be not sad: for the joy of the Lord is our strength.
Reflection
The people are weeping because they heard the law and saw how far short they fell. Nehemiah tells them the joy of the Lord is their strength — not their performance, not their track record. Joy is the footing that holds.
