Reflection

The psalm changes from talking about God to talking to him precisely here, in the valley. Nearness is what changes, not the road.

The valley and the Shepherd

This is the most memorized verse in the Psalms, and the reason is in the shift from third person to second. Up to this point the psalmist talks about the Lord; here he talks to him. The valley forces the closeness, and the closeness changes everything.
